We are taking the steel into the future
At EAB, we want to grow and do so in a sustainable way. For us, there is no contradiction between growth and taking an active environmental responsibility. On the contrary.
It encourages us to think and act in new ways and actively take part in the developments that are underway in many areas. Developments that include new possibilities and innovations in materials, techniques and ways of working. Every step, big or small, in the right direction is important. When we say “We are taking steel into the future”, it is a journey we are making together with our customers, suppliers and other partners.
On the list towards a fossil-free steel
In 2022, we launched a dialogue with SSAB about becoming part of their future fossil-free offering. As a loyal customer, EAB is in the priority queue that SSAB’s management team is strictly working towards. In 2026, at the earliest, the first fossil-free steel will leave SSAB’s mills for delivery to its customers and we are more than ready to implement the fossil-free steel in our own products as soon as it is available.
“It is very positive that EAB is committed to taking steel into the future. SSAB continuously monitors the market’s interest in fossil-free steel and this is a very important input in our planning for both the timetable and volumes for fossil-free steel. As for EAB, we have had a very good business relationship for a long time and of course it is just as important for us going forward,” says Jonas Larsson, Head of Environment at SSAB.
Ongoing sustainability projects
When it comes to sustainability reporting and procedures for traceability and mapping of our suppliers, several parallel projects are now underway. Among other things, there is a brand new EU directive called CSRD, which means that all companies and organisations must report according to a new reporting standard called ESRS, which stands for European Sustainability Reporting Standards.
The purpose of the ESRS is to ensure that companies disclose sufficient information about the risks, opportunities and impacts of their activities on people and the environment. Increased transparency makes it easier to compare the sustainability performance of different companies.
The sustainability team
Linn Petersson works as a sustainability manager at EAB.
– It is a demanding process to develop new, correct routines and documents for sustainability reporting according to the new EU directive. Therefore, we have enlisted the help of the Sustainability Team, who will also guide us in connecting EAB to EcoVadis. EcoVadis is a global evaluation system that ranks companies based on how well they fulfil requirements and work with the environment, labour conditions, human rights, ethics and procurement, says Linn.
EPD document for our steel frame
– We have just produced our first EPD document for our steel frame at EAB Stålbyggnader. “The EPD document is an environmental product declaration that states the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle, which is something that more and more of our customers are asking for, says Linn.
– It is very exciting to work as a sustainability manager at EAB, as we are so active in our sustainability work and want to be transparent to our customers and the world around us. It might seem that we have a lot of projects going on at the same time, but we see it as an advantage as much of the preparatory work done can be used in several contexts. Working actively with these issues, evaluations and reports is definitely necessary to be able to take steel into the future in a sustainable way, Linn concludes.
